Abstract
La Navigation de saint Brendan, rédigée en latin avant le Xe siècle et traduite en plusieurs langues européennes tout au long du Moyen Âge, met en scène le voyage maritime d’un groupe de moines irlandais à travers les îles dispersées dans l’Océan. Ce texte, qui a été défini comme une « odyssée chrétienne », accorde à l’île une place tout à fait centrale qui peut être appréciée à plusieurs niveaux. La présente étude, fruit d’une collaboration amicale entre deux médiévistes spécialistes de la navigation à voile, se focalise sur le rôle structurel que l’île joue dans la narration et sur le réseau de significations auquel peut ouvrir la dimension insulaire du périple.
The Navigation of saint Brendan, written in Latin before the 10th century and translated in several European languages during the whole Middle ages, relates the sea voyage of a group of Irish monks throughout the islands scattered in the Ocean. This text, which was defined a “christian odyssey”, gives the island a very central place that can be appreciated on many levels. This study, a friendly collaboration between two medievalists and sailors, focuses on the structural role the island plays in the narrative and the network of meanings which can open the island dimension of the journey.
